Pasta coral reef diorama display

Use the different textures of dried pasta to mimic underwater life. Assorted Pasta Shapes you may use include

  • Penne: For tall sea grass.
  • Rotini/Fusilli: For spiral coral.
  • Rotelle (Wagon Wheels): For brain coral textures.
  • Shells (Large and Small): For crusty reef textures.
  • Rigatoni/Ditalini: For tube sponges.
  • Acrylic Paint: Bright, neon, or pastel colors.
  • Air Dry Clay or Play-Doh: To serve as the ocean floor base.
  • River Rocks/Pebbles: For structural support and realism.
  • Strong Glue: If not using wet clay to hold items use hot glue.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prep the Pasta Coral

Before assembling, you need to color your pasta. There are two ways to do this:

  1. The Paint Method: Use a brush or sponge to coat the pasta in acrylic paint. This gives the most vibrant, opaque look seen in the image.
  2. The Dye Method: Shake pasta in a baggie with a few drops of rubbing alcohol and food coloring. (This looks more like a stain and is less vibrant than the photo).

Let everything dry completely on parchment paper before handling.

2. Create the Base

  • Flatten out a large piece of purple or blue modeling clay onto a sturdy surface (like a piece of cardboard or a felt mat).
  • Make it thick (about 1 inch) so it can hold the weight of the pasta trees.
  • Press a few natural river rocks into the center to create “cliffs” for your coral to climb.

3. Build the Reef

  • Now, start planting your pasta into the clay. The clay acts as the glue!
  • Tall Grass: Group the green Penne at the back, sticking them into the clay at slight angles.
  • Brain Coral: Cluster the Rotelle (wagon wheels) or purple Shells closely together over a mound of clay or a rock.
  • Tube Sponges: Stack a few Rigatoni vertically in small groups.
  • Spiral Coral: Stick Rotini in various spots to add height and movement.

4. The Finishing Touches

  • Fill in any empty spots on the clay with tiny shells or small pebbles.
  • If you want a permanent display, you can go back with a clear glossy spray or Mod Podge to give the coral a wet, underwater shimmer.

Tip: If your clay starts to dry out while you’re working, use a hot glue gun to attach the pasta to the rocks. This ensures the tall pieces like the Penne don’t tip over as the sculpture cures.

How to dye pasta using hand sanitizer?

Use paint and hand sanitizer to dye pasta.

Similar to dying pasta with rubbing alcohol, instead of rubbing alcohol use hand sanitizer. In a ziplock bag fill your pasta and add about 2 tablespoon hand sanitizer and 1/2 teaspoon food coloring. Or add as much color as you like to get the color you desire. Note that the color is lighter when it dries on the pasta. Let it sit in the solution for a couple of hours and then arrange it on paper towel to let it dry.

What colors can you use to dye pasta?

The following colors can be used to dye pasta and noodles using the above methods:

  • food colors
  • liquid watercolors
  • acrylic paints
