A simple update with lots of character in my black and white modern kitchen is the kitchen island.

I used 1x4s for board and batten and cracked pepper by Behr in semi-gloss for painting the bottom. To add some character, I installed a towel bar on the side of the island. Inserted S hooks for adding decorative baskets, utensils, and kitchen towels.

The leather backs swivel counter height chairs are super comfortable and we love it.

Background:

I love light and simple kitchens. A kitchen should have empty clutter-free surfaces to ensure a minimalist look overall. Usually when we cook it gets very busy in the kitchen. Therefore, my personal preference is organized cabinets and clear counter spaces.

Since, many fumes are involves when cooking in kitchen, I feel it is vital to keep it clean. Therefore, my personal preference is a light kitchen, with white cabinets, which shows the dirt easily and one can wipe and clean.

Since, the appliances, cabinets and kitchen island are already places of work my idea was to decorate and add subtle touches to it only.

Therefore, I added a wooden board with orchid on top of the island on the right side. Besides it, have a window facing breakfast nook which I have turned into an indoor garden.

A moving cart is parked by the right side of the island, for essentials like fruit basket and appliances. I like to keep candles, Scentsy, and decorative accessories for feel good moments.

To keep things simple, I decided to only play with paints in this space, and add tasteful changes. Therefore, in my humble opinion board and batten adds character to a once known plain kitchen island. Since, all the elements in the kitchen are white and soft grey, the cracked pepper (shade of black) adds contrast.

The towel bar has kitchen utilities which adds statement to the left side, which is just a passing by space, besides the pantry cabinets.
