Essential Tools and Materials
Before you dive into the projects, let’s look at the basic supplies you’ll need depending on your project:
- Glassware: Vases, bottles, jars, wine glasses, picture frames, window panes, and even old plates. Always ensure the glass is clean and dry before painting.
- Glass Paints: This is the most crucial item. Look for paints specifically formulated for glass.
- Acrylic Enamel Paint or Spray Paint Enamel Paints: A great choice for beginners. It’s durable, non-toxic, and often requires oven-curing for a permanent, dishwasher-safe finish.

- Glass Paint Markers: Excellent for fine details, lettering, and creating outlines. They offer more control than a brush.
- Paint Brushes and flat brush: A variety of sizes and types will be useful, including a fine-tipped brush for details and a larger flat brush for filling in larger areas.

3 Methods for Painting on Glass Surfaces:
Basic Glass Painting Techniques
- Clean Your Glass: This is the most important step! Wash your glass with warm, soapy water. Then, wipe it down with rubbing alcohol to remove all oils and fingerprints.
- Outline Your Design: If you’re using a template, tape it to the inside of the glass. Use an outliner or a paint marker to trace the design on the outside. Let it dry completely.
- Fill in with Color: Use a paintbrush to fill in the areas within your outline. You may need to apply a second or third coat to get an opaque color.
- Cure Your Creation: To make your paint permanent and durable, it often needs to be “cured.”
- Air-Curing: Simply let the item dry for a few weeks (check the paint manufacturer’s instructions for the exact time).
- Oven-Curing: This method is best for a durable, dishwasher-safe finish. Place the item in a cold oven, turn the temperature up to the recommended setting, bake, and then let it cool down with the oven.

Holly tested out opaque (gloss enamel acrylic paints) and translucent (crystal gloss enamel) paints and mixed them with different amounts of glazing medium or Americana clear medium to test the paint results on a glass removed from old frame. The results:
1) Opaque High Gloss Enamel Paint
2) With a bit of clear fill medium (1:1 ratio)
3) Clearer fill medium
4) 1:2 ratio of 1-part opaque paint, 2 parts clear fill medium
5) 1:1 ratio of opaque paint and glazing medium
6) More glazing medium to one-part opaque paint
7) 1:2-1:3 of glazing medium–I didn’t measure anything, just eyeballed it. This last one is somewhere in the ballpark of 2 or 3 parts glazing medium to 1 part opaque paint.
A) DecoArt Translucent Crystal Glass Enamel Paint
B) 1:1 translucent paint with clear medium
C) 1:1 translucent paint with glazing medium
D) 1:2 translucent paint with glazing medium
