Holly tested out opaque (gloss enamel acrylic paints) and translucent (crystal gloss enamel) paints and mixed them with different amounts of glazing medium or Americana clear medium to test the paint results on a glass removed from old frame. The results:

  1. opaque High Gloss Enamel paint
  2. with a bit of clear fill medium (1:1 ratio)
  3. clearer fill medium
  4. 1:2 ratio of 1-part opaque paint, 2 parts clear fill medium
  5. 1:1 ratio of opaque paint and glazing medium
  6. more glazing medium to one-part opaque paint
  7. 1:2–1:3 of glazing medium–I didn’t measure anything, just eyeballed it. This last one is somewhere in the ballpark of 2 or 3 parts glazing medium to 1 part opaque paint.

You can find many different brands and types of glass paints in the craft store. From transparent glass paints to crystalline. You can also use some special paints which come with instructions to bake your painted utensil for a few minutes for perfect results.

  7. Rhonda Maxwell says:

Just a tip for those that want the paint used on glass to adhere better and hold up to washing clean without messing up
Your beautiful paint job! Pick up a box of smooth tile grout. Add about a teaspoon to any 2ounce bottle of glass paint of your
Choice. Mix well. When your finished painting your piece bake in the oven according to the paint brands
Instructions. Adding the smooth tile grout to your paint makes it so much more durable than just baking
Your piece when completed. The grout will not change the appearance of the paint at all! Your colors will
Stay true and your beautiful hard work won’t get washed away! It makes the piece dishwasher safe but I
Still prefer to hand wash. Happy painting all!!!! Rhonda M.
